NBC 6's Adam Kuperstein reports on the 12,000 calories that Michael Phelps eats daily.
Part of Bommarito’s job is to assign meal plans that optimize performance, and he never gets close to 12,000-calories a day. “Probably between 4,000 and 4,500 is what I’ve assigned sometimes,” said Bommarito. NBC’6’s Adam Kuperstein asked, “And that’s the most?”
“Yeah, that’s well beyond whatever I’ve assigned anybody,” said Bomarrito. “Even some of my lineman.” “It shows just how hard he must work because he is so fit,” said Mallory Burdette. “So, I mean he doesn’t have an extra ounce of fat on him.”
To put Phelps’ 12,000-calorie diet into perspective, the average man at his age of 23 needs 2,000 calories a day, but Phelps is far from average. When he is not racking up gold medals, he trains five hours a day, six days a week, which is why he can eat the equivalent of 25 Big Macs in one day.
Now for the rest of the day, Phelps eats two pounds of pasta, two ham and cheese sandwiches smothered in mayo, an entire pizza, and then he washes it down with 2,000 thousand calories worth of energy drinks.
